Dr. Gray’s Hospital in Elgin has added another key member to its maternity team as efforts to restore full maternity services in the region progress.
Calum McDonald, a consultant anaesthetist and training program director for anaesthesia in northern Scotland, has joined the maternity team. He will be working at the hospital part-time.
McDonald, who has been a consultant anaesthetist in Aberdeen since 2010 with a focus on obstetric anaesthesia, has gained extensive experience working in smaller hospitals across the north. He expressed his enthusiasm for being part of the team bringing consultant-led births back to Moray.
“I’ve learned a lot about the challenges and benefits of providing healthcare outside major centres and understand how much these services mean to local communities,” McDonald said. “We are planning to offer caesarean section surgeries in Moray by 2025.”
He highlighted the growing team, which now includes advanced scanning and fetal medicine expertise, as a key factor in improving services.
Jane Gill, programme director for the North of Scotland Maternity Collaborative, emphasized that the health board is committed to enhancing services in Moray by 2026.
“Building strong relationships between the teams in Aberdeen, Elgin, and Inverness is vital for our long-term success,” Gill said. “Calum brings invaluable experience to the team, and we are thrilled to have him on board. This is another significant step toward providing the most comprehensive maternity care Moray has ever seen.”
