Liberty, MO – Quick-thinking first responders in Liberty rescued a woman and her baby from a vehicle trapped in an icy creek following a rollover crash Tuesday morning.
Firefighters and police officers were dispatched to the scene, where the vehicle had flipped onto its side and became partially submerged in the creek. Both the woman and her baby were trapped inside.
A Liberty police officer and the assistant fire chief bravely entered the icy waters to reach the vehicle. Despite the ice cracking beneath them, the officer pressed on, with the water rising to his waist.
Using a tool, the officer cut open the windshield to access the woman. He helped her out through the opening, and firefighters removed the rest of the windshield. The officer then crawled to the back seat, where he found the baby, still strapped into a car seat. Fortunately, the car seat was not submerged in the freezing water.
The officer carefully lifted the baby and handed the child to firefighters, who took the baby to an awaiting ambulance.
Both the mother and her baby were treated at the hospital, along with the officer, who was also involved in the rescue.
At the hospital, the officer checked on the woman and her child, ensuring they were recovering.
