Boston leaders and residents are celebrating after Mayor Michelle Wu announced the birth of her third child, Mira Wu Pewarski, on Monday.

Governor Maura Healey shared the news with excitement, saying, “New baby, Mira, a baby girl!” Mira was born weighing 8 pounds, 4 ounces, and measuring 20 inches long.

“Best wishes to mom, baby, and the whole family,” said District 4 Boston City Councilor Brian Worrell.

Wu’s birth of Mira marks a historic moment as she becomes the first sitting Boston mayor to give birth while in office.

For many, the event is more than just a personal milestone. Advocates for gender equality see it as an important step forward. “Seeing Mayor Wu balance family life while serving our city sets an inspiring example for moms who want to do both,” said Meghan Block, of Wicked Good Mom Media.

Wu has experience juggling family and politics. After the birth of her first child in 2014, she remained active in the City Council. Today, she shared that she’s already been in touch with her senior staff, continuing her work as mayor.

“She’s a strong advocate for paid family leave,” Block added. “Having a leader who supports this option is vital. Whether or not she takes it herself is a personal decision.”

Boston City Council President Ruthzee Louijeune echoed these sentiments, emphasizing that having a baby should not prevent Wu from performing her duties as mayor.

“This could also lead to updates in Boston’s City Charter,” Louijeune said. “The language currently refers to the mayor as ‘he,’ but we need to ensure it reflects everyone, whether it’s ‘he’ or ‘she.’”

If Wu is unable to attend an event or fulfill her responsibilities, Louijeune would temporarily assume the role of acting mayor.
