Survey Reveals Strong Need for Baby Loss Guidance in Wales, Says Charity Sands

by daisy

A recent report by Sands has highlighted a strong desire among people in Wales for better guidance on discussing pregnancy and baby loss. According to the charity’s survey, 71% of those who know someone affected by such losses expressed a need for advice on how to initiate sensitive conversations.

The study also revealed that a quarter of Welsh residents who have experienced baby or pregnancy loss personally felt ignored because no one approached them to discuss their experience. However, it was noted that when given the opportunity to talk about their ordeal, the majority expressed relief. Specifically, 55% felt unburdened, while 32% felt that their baby’s significance was acknowledged.

Clea Harmer, Sands’ chief executive, emphasized the challenges of discussing pregnancy loss, noting that many people fear saying the wrong thing. She highlighted the positive impact when friends, family, and colleagues reach out to connect, reassuring bereaved parents that they are not alone in their grief.

The survey also examined people’s comfort levels in discussing loss with different groups: partners (71%), family members (65%), and friends (65%). However, confidence dropped significantly when discussing the topic with work colleagues or acquaintances from communities.

Regarding the workplace, the report found that 78% of bereaved parents return to work, but nearly half felt their loss was disregarded by coworkers. This lack of acknowledgment left many feeling isolated and undervalued, with some even leaving their jobs as a result.

Despite these challenges, the report highlighted the positive impact of open dialogue in workplaces, which helped bereaved parents feel supported and understood. Sands is urging small and medium-sized businesses to take advantage of their free Bereavement in the Workplace Training to foster more supportive environments.

Overall, Sands’ Finding the Words campaign aims to break the silence around pregnancy and baby loss by providing conversation starters and supportive advice. The goal is to create communities where grieving parents can openly express their feelings without fear of being overlooked or misunderstood.
