Stepping Hill Hospital, operated by Stockport NHS Foundation Trust, has agreed to compensate a family with over £29 million following medical negligence that resulted in severe brain damage to a baby girl. The trust acknowledged errors by its staff leading to the child’s cerebral palsy.
This settlement is reportedly the second largest ever reached by the NHS in a medical negligence case, as stated by the family’s legal representatives. The trust expressed regret and highlighted improvements made since the incident.
The baby, protected by anonymity, initially appeared healthy but later exhibited distress symptoms. The family’s lawyers cited critical lapses by hospital staff and delays in necessary surgical intervention.
At the High Court in London, the trust accepted responsibility for breaching duty and causing harm. Barrister Bill Braithwaite KC, representing the family, noted the prolonged wait for resolution before the trust agreed to settle. He emphasized the profound impact on the girl’s life and her family.
Yasmin Ameer of Nockolds Solicitors, expressing gratitude for representing the family, stressed the significance of the settlement for someone enduring irreversible damage. The firm secured interim payments totaling £2.13 million during the case, facilitating the family’s acquisition of a more suitable residence and a rehabilitation program.
Junior counsel Chris Allen praised the family’s dignified and resilient conduct throughout the legal process. He expressed satisfaction in achieving a settlement that ensures comprehensive support for the claimant’s future needs.
