Pediatric Provider Warns Against Weighted Sleepwear for Infants

by daisy

In Bryan, Texas, a growing number of reports to the federal government have raised concerns about infants dying while wearing weighted sleepwear such as sleep sacks and swaddles.

Britni Lehde, a pediatric provider at HealthPoint, emphasized that while swaddling newborns is acceptable, once they begin rolling onto their sides, the situation changes. She strongly advises against using weighted sleepwear, as it can hinder an infant’s ability to breathe properly.

“It can affect their breathing. Every infant has a different weight, so using a one-size-fits-all weighted item can pose a risk,” Lehde explained.

Regarding the recommended weight for safe sleep, Lehde emphasized that no additional weight is recommended at all.

“We don’t recommend any,” she stated firmly.

This cautionary advice underscores the importance of ensuring infants sleep in a safe environment free from potential hazards like weighted sleepwear.
