The indomitable spirit of a 13-month-old infant from Illogan, who lost his left eye to a rare form of sarcoma cancer, has been hailed by his family as he prepares for another surgery. Sol, affectionately dubbed “Super Sol” for his resilient demeanor, is scheduled for a crucial operation next week to eradicate the remaining portion of the tumor nestled in his brain.
Sol’s medical odyssey commenced last summer when his parents, Becky Flower and Damien Stephens, observed signs of visual impairment. Diagnosed with a Primitive Myxoid Mesenchymal tumor, Sol’s case presents an exceedingly rare manifestation, with medical experts indicating his status as among the pioneering cases worldwide afflicted with this form of ocular cancer.
The arduous path of treatment demanded the removal of his left eye and subjected Sol to a relentless regimen of tests, surgeries, and chemotherapy. Remarkably, despite enduring 28 General Anaesthetics, spending 41 nights in hospital, and enduring over 130 blood draws, Sol’s buoyant spirit remains undaunted, earning him admiration as the family’s “little superstar.”
Reflecting on Sol’s resilience, Ms. Flower expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support from their community, acknowledging the overwhelming response during their trying times.
As Sol gears up for his forthcoming surgery, scheduled at Bristol’s neurosurgical center, his family remains cautiously optimistic. The operation, slated to excise the final five percent of the tumor, presents a delicate challenge due to its intricate positioning around a vital artery leading to the brain.
Damien Stephens underscored the gravity of the situation, emphasizing the collective effort required from a multidisciplinary team of surgeons to ensure Sol’s well-being. With the stakes high and the risks substantial, the family braces for an “all or nothing” scenario, mindful of the complexities involved.
Throughout Sol’s ordeal, the community has rallied behind him and his family, offering unwavering emotional support and financial assistance to alleviate the burden of mounting medical expenses, which approximate £1,000 per month. In a heartwarming gesture, a family friend has embarked on a sponsored 5km daily run throughout September, surpassing her fundraising target threefold, symbolizing the unity and solidarity in the face of adversity.
